Certificates for Verification of Electronic Documents
This website contains information about digital certificates issued by the Italian
authorities and required to verify the authenticity of electronic passports,
electronic residence permits and electronic identity cards.
Electronic Passports
Italian ordinary Electronic Passports are compliant to the standards defined by the
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
This document consists of 48 printed pages and it is equipped with a RF
(Radio Frequency) microprocessor, inserted inside the back cover, that stores
both personal and biometric (photo and fingerprints) information of the holder
and the digital signature of the Authority who issued the document.
The expiration date of the document varies according to the age of the card holder:
- 3 years under the age of 3;
- 5 years between 3 and 18 years;
- 10 years for adults.
Electronic Residence Permits
The Electronic Residence Permit allows foreigners and stateless people in the territory
of the State to remain in Italy, under the conditions and in accordance with the
current legislation.
The document consists of a smart card, resistant to wear (for this purpose printed
data are protected by a thin transparent film, which is applied on both sides during
its production) and displays the data of the foreigner. In addition, it is equipped
with a RF (Radio Frequency) microprocessor, that stores both personal and biometric
(photo and fingerprints) information of the holder and the digital signature of the
Authority who issued the document.
The duration of the Residence Permit is provided for by visa.
Electronic Identity Cards
The Electronic Identity Card (EIC) is a document that certifies the identity of the
card holder and has the following specifications:

polycarbonate substrate personalised with the holder's data and photograph printed
by laser engraving and including security elements (holograms, security backgrounds, etc.);
-
a radio frequency microchip (RFID) containing the card holder's personal data, photo
and fingerprints. The data stored inside the chip is digitally signed by the Ministry
of the Interior.
The expiration date of the document varies according to the age of the card holder:
- 3 years under the age of 3;
- 5 years between 3 and 18 years;
- 10 years for adults.
CSCA Certificates
CSCA certifies both Document Signers (DS) and Security Object DS sign (SOD). This last
one is stored in the e-document. The current certificate of the DS, which contains its
own public key, is also included in the SOD. Italy has established three Document Signers,
for Italian Electronic Passports, Electronic Residence Permits and Electronic Identity Cards.
